We can't emphasise enough how important it is to have travel insurance that includes anaphylaxis.

The last thing you need to have on your mind (and being asked questions about by medical staff) is whether you're insured, whether the insurance covers your anaphylaxis and, if not, can you afford to pay for the necessary treatment.

Finding travel insurance that can cover anaphylaxis (or any allergic reactions) can be difficult. We specialise in providing travel insurance for people with medical conditions. Obviously we can't guarantee to cover everyone with anaphylaxis - it will depend on your individual circumstances.

What are the implications for travel insurance and anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a condition is one that can manifest with alarming speed, and which can require urgent medical intervention.

Standard travel insurance usually isn't designed to include cover for anaphylaxis - or most other medical conditions. Therefore, any claims, directly or indirectly related to anaphylaxis are unlikely to be met by ‘ordinary’ travel insurance. This opens you up to potentially, very serious financial risk.

Extra costs you might have to meet if you don’t have travel insurance that include anaphylaxis

If the person who is having an anaphylactic reaction is not near a hospital or not near one with adequate medical facilities, it's possible transportation by air ambulance may be needed. This bill could run into thousands of pounds.

Medical bills can be very high – consultations, tests, examinations, nursing care, medication, physiotherapy etc.

Repatriation costs can be very high - again, especially if an air ambulance is needed or if a nurse or doctor needs to be in attendance.

Extra return air fares may need to be bought not only for the person who has anaphylaxis but a partner or travelling companion who accompanies them back home.

Extra accommodation may need to be booked for a partner or travelling companion who stays with you.

It is therefore very important that anyone travelling with you is covered by our policy so that any claim they need to make that could be in any way regarded as linked to your anaphylaxia will be met. An 'ordinary' travel insurance might decline their claim on the same grounds as they might decline a claim made by you.

It's just not worth the risk of not having specialist travel insurance that includes anaphylaxis!
