Obtaining travel insurance that includes cover for bowel cancer is probably not the first thing you think about, having been given your diagnosis. However, when the time is right and you begin to think further ahead, whether travelling is still possible is one the questions that many people do ask. After your diagnosis and treatment, you may feel that you deserve to go on holiday, in order to have a break.

The answer is that yes, it's usually perfectly possible to travel and go on holiday! However, having a travel insurance policy that will cover any claims related directly or indirectly to bowel cancer is very important.

If you also hadn't told them about it when buying the insurance, they could decline your claim because of non disclosure and/or because in their view, your treatment was directly or indirectly related to your pre-existing medical condition.

If you need treatment towards the end of your trip, you may need to purchase new return tickets. These may need to be bought not only for the person who has bowel cancer but also a travelling companion who accompanies them back home.

If you have had to spend time in hospital and a partner or travelling companion has stayed with you, it may be necessary for them to buy extra time in their accommodation. It is therefore very important that anyone travelling with you is covered by our policy so that any claim they need to make that could be in any way regarded as linked to your bowel cancer will be met. An 'ordinary' travel insurance might decline their claim on the same grounds as they might decline a claim made by you.
