Hearing the diagnosis of breast cancer can be frightening - one of the worst news a woman can receive. Your mind will probably be flooded with questions about what this means exactly, what treatment is available and how your life will be affected afterwards.

Whilst we can't answer your medical questions, we hope we can help when you're in a place to consider travelling again. Maybe after treatment you feel that you deserve to go on holiday, in order to have a break.

We receive referrals from hospitals, GPs, clinics and medical charities from all over the UK.

By asking you some questions, we will get an understanding of your particular situation. We'll take into account a number of factors, including what treatment you have received, what kind, whether it's finished (and, if so, how long ago), whether you're travelling within Europe or further afield.

We need to understand your situation as clearly as possible so we can give you the assurance that if we say we can cover you, then things like cancellation, medical expenses and repatriation will be covered by our policy.

What are the travel insurance implications if I have breast cancer?

It is incredibly important to be properly insured if you have any kind of medical condition. If you fail to disclose relevant information, an 'ordinary' travel insurance is unlikely to meet a claim in any way related to your medical condition. The danger is that if your breast cancer hasn't been declared and accepted by an insurer and you become ill, there is the danger they would decline your claim because you hadn't declared your pre-existing medical condition. There is also the risk that they would link whatever illness you had that caused the claim with your breast cancer - even indirectly. They could then decline your claim on those grounds.

If you have declared your breast cancer to us and we have accepted to cover it, then even a claim indirectly linked to it will be met.

What claims might you need to make that you should ensure you're covered for?

The obvious one is medical bills. Treatment can be expensive - consultations, diagnostic investigations, medication, nursing care etc.

If you have become ill near the end of your holiday, a partner or travelling companion who might have stayed with you will need to make a claim for extra accommodation.

You (and possibly a partner/travelling companion) will need to arrange new return tickets.

It is therefore very important that anyone travelling with you is covered by our policy so that any claim they need to make that could be in any way regarded as linked to your breast cancer will be met. An 'ordinary' travel insurance might decline their claim on the same grounds as they might decline a claim made by you.
