travel insurance for EuropeTravel insurance for Europe is essential! Just because Europe doesn't seem that far away, not taking out travel insurance could expose you to serious financial risk. Why?

  • Because medical bills can run into thousands of pounds, even in Europe - Spain especially.
  • A European Health Insurance Card only puts you on the same basis as an insured resident of the European country you're in. It doesn't necessarily mean that any consultations or treatment you need will be free. It also won't cover you for things like cancellation, loss of baggage and personal items etc. If you need to be repatriated to the UK and need an air ambulance (it does happen!), this could run into many thousands of pounds, too.

When is a European Health Insurance Card useful?

Most travel insurance policies have what's called an excess. This means that if you make a claim, you need to meet the first part of it. If your medical claim is low and therefore wouldn't be met by your insurance, the costs could be met under the EHIC system. To apply for a European Health Insurance Card, just click here (a new browser window will open).

Our travel insurance can cover you just for Europe and you can by a policy just for one trip. However, if you're travelling more than once a year, it could work out more economical if you buy an annual, multi-trip policy. You can then take as many trips as you like in a year!

Which countries come under the definition of Europe?

We have different policies, depending on whether you have any pre-existing medical conditions that need to be included in the cover (see below).

If you don't have any pre-existing medical conditions, the definition of Europe is:The Republic of Ireland, The Channel Islands, The Continent of Europe (West of the Ural Mountains), Madeira, Canary Islands, Iceland, the Azores, Mediterranean Islands and non European Countries bordering the Mediterranean (excluding Algeria, Israel, Lebanon and Libya).

If you do have pre-existing medical conditions that need to be covered, the definition of Europe is:

Europe 1: The continent of Europe, west of the Ural Mountains, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Chanel Islands and all countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, Madeira, The Azores. Excludes Spain, The Canaries, Turkey, Cyprus, Malta and Switzerland.

Europe 2: As above and including Spain, The Canaries, Turkey, Cyprus, Malta and Switzerland.

If you have any kind of pre-existing medical condition, it's really important that it's declared and accepted for cover by us. Why? Because if you make a claim that's directly or indirectly related to an undisclosed, pre-existing medical condition, your claim is likely to be declined.

What's regarded as a pre-existing medical condition?

Even things like asthma and well controlled blood pressure or cholesterol would fall into this definition. Even in Europe, medical treatment can be costly, so it's really worth going through our medical screening process and having medical conditions included in your travel insurance with us.

If you're travelling to Europe, you may want to learn some phrases in the language of the country you're visiting.
