Why is it often difficult to get travel insurance as we get older? Many people quite rightly point out that we live longer and that older people these days are much fitter, more active and, often, more financially able to travel. Many think insurance companies are prejudiced against older people. Indeed, the UK government is proposing to introduce legislation that prevents discrimination on age issues. Harriet Harman is proposing to counter age discrimination in the provisions of good and services as part of an Equality Bill. To read The Independent's article, click here. However, statistics do show that the older we get, the more chance we will need to make a claim (especially a medical one) and the higher the claim amount will be. This has to be balanced against the levels of the premiums for the policy, to ensure there is enough money 'in the pot' to meet the total cost of claims. We try to cover as many older people as possible - even if they have pre existing medical conditions. However, we have to have certain limitations to enable the scheme to be viable. We can cover people up to the age of 85 for single trips. We can cover up to the age of 75 under annual, multi-trip policies if you are travelling only within Europe. We can cover up to the age of 65 under annual, multi-trip policies if you are travelling Worldwide. |
