Travel insurance if you have sickle cell anaemia

travel insurance including sickle cell anaemiaOur travel insurance can include cover if you have sickle cell anaemia (subject to a telephone medical screening).

Obtaining travel insurance that includes cover for sickle cell anaemia can be difficult to find.

However, we specialise in travel insurance that can include many different medical conditions and we receive referrals from hospitals, clinics and charities from all over the UK.

We can't guarantee that we can cover everyone with sickle cell anaemia. We will need to ask you some questions about how it's affecting you, in order to understand your individual situation. Hopefully, we will be able to include it in our policy and, if so, we'll be able to provide you with a quote and deal with the booking at the same time, if you would like to.

Having a travel insurance policy that will cover any claims related directly or indirectly to sickle cell anaemia is very important. Otherwise, you're leaving yourself vulnerable to financial risk if you have to cancel your trip or obtain medical assistance when you're away.

What are the implications for travel insurance and sickle cell anaemia?

If you take out 'ordinary' travel insurance, it will almost certainly not cover sickle cell anaemia. This is why you need a more specialised kind of travel insurance.

Medical bills can be very high – consultations, tests, examinations, nursing care, medication etc.

If you need treatment towards the end of your trip, you may need to purchase new return tickets because you had to change your travel arrangements. These may need to be bought also for a partner or travelling companion who accompanies you home.

If you have had to spend time in hospital and a partner or travelling companion has stayed with you, it may be necessary for them to buy extra time in their accommodation. It is therefore very important that anyone travelling with you is covered by our policy so that any claim they need to make that could be in any way regarded as linked to your sickle cell anaemia will be met. An 'ordinary' travel insurance might decline their claim on the same grounds as they might decline a claim made by you.

It's just not worth the risk, not buying specialist travel insurance that covers sickle cell anaemia.
